While Asian cuisines are not often associated with sweets, there is a range of flavours in Asian cuisine that can be added to cakes to create unique and interesting desserts. Here are some ideas for Asian flavours that you can try in some cakes. 

Matcha tea-cake

Matcha is a finely ground and processed form of green tea. It has a range of proposed health benefits, as well as a distinctive initially astringent and 'green taste,' followed by a sweet aftertaste. It can be a great accent to a traditional tea cake, which is a light and tasty cake served with beverages. Try combining 2 eggs, 180 grams of butter and 1 cup of caster sugar. Add 1.5 cups of self raising flour, 0.5 cup of milk and 2 Tbsp of matcha tea powder and blending until smooth. Then cook at 180 degrees Celsuis until the cake is lightly browned and a skewer can be inserted and withdrawn cleanly. 

Soy-chocolate lava cake

Soy sauce has a naturally salty taste with a kick of 'unami' - the fifth taste described by Japanese scientists who first defined it as a 'delicious taste'. The savoury taste can work well with strong sweet tastes such as chocolate sauces. Chocolate lava cake can be easily made in single serving in a coffee mug. Try grabbing a mug and mixing 2 Tbsp plain flour, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, and 1/2 tsp baking powder with a fork. Add 1 Tbsp of melted butter, 1 tsp of soy sauce and 1 tsp of full cream milk to the dry mix and combine thoroughly. Finally, mix in one egg and a pinch of vanilla.  Microwave for 1 minute at full power and check the texture, checking if the surface is a fully solid crust layer. If not ready yet continue microwaving for 20 second intervals until finished. 

Steamed dumplings

Steamed dumplings are a traditional finish to any dim sum meal. Try making a dough from 2 cups of rice flour dissolved in 2 cups of boiling water. Then add 3/4 of a raw sugar to the mix to create a tasty and pliable dough which can be wrapped around any filling from dried fruit, to chocolate chips or a spoon of sweet nut butter. You can then steam the mix over boiling water for 2-3 minutes to create a tasty Asian inspired dumpling.
